I love this trip I have done it 3 times and the first two were amazing .
The first time I did this trip was for my 34th birthday and the best part of this trip was that my sister surprised me and came along . The hike is 22km total and is a steady climb the whole way .
The first part starts from the parking lot and heads to Red Heather warming Hut a great place for a rest and to warm up . I love all the birds that will come and eat right out of your hands .
After the red Heather Hut it is a climb all the way to Elfin lake .The Shelter at Elfins sleeps 32 poeple in Bunk beds . There is a stove at both Elfin Lake and Red Heather hut , They both are heated , and a perfect way to do a a short hike or over a few days . The whole way after The Heather Hut is beautiful and on a clear Day the views are worth the climb . The Trail is well marked with orange poles , so no worry for getting lost .The Trail is very busy , so it is best to leave early if you want to sleep at Elfin lakes . I have only done this trail in the Winter so I have never seen the lakes because they are covered in snow .I think next time I do this trail it will be in the spring
The third time I decided to Take Chandler and his friend Loni . I couldnt believe how well the kids did on this Hike , but on the way home we were leaving the parking lot when I hit ice and went over a cliff . I lost control and flipped three times and falling about 100ft . My girlfriends jumped out of the truck and my self and the kids were left in the truck. I dont know how but other then being trapped in the truck we were all fine . I cant believe that I never killed anyone and at times my heart still races to the thought that things could of been so different . I cant help but blame my self ,because how could I be so care less and not brought chains . This is something that I will hopefully get over but fear and panic still haunt me . I dont know when I will be able to drive to Elfin Lakes again or any snow packed roads the thought makes me sick and panic of what ifs .
I only can Hope that Chandler and Loni remember the trip for the hike and how much fun we had and what they were able to finish 22km in snow with a steady climb most poeple I know couldnt do or would even try . I hope to them it was that and not the trip we almost died . I love chandler and Loni with all my heart .
